Leadwork is the most technically demanding element of roofing. A failed lead chimney flashing or valley can cause significant internal water damage within a single winter. In Eastbourne, the coastal climate creates specific demands: code 5 lead is required within approximately 500m of the seafront, patination oil treatment is mandatory on all new lead near the coast, and thermal movement allowances must be calculated for Eastbourne's significant temperature differential between seafront and elevated suburban positions.

Code 4 lead is 1.8mm; code 5 is 2.24mm. Code 4 is appropriate for sheltered inland positions in Hampden Park, Willingdon and Hailsham. We assess exposure at survey and specify accordingly. Chimney Flashings — The Most Common Failure Point

Chimney flashings are the most common source of roof leaks across Eastbourne. Valley Linings — Specification and Maintenance

Lead valley linings require correct lapping — minimum 150mm overlap, fixed clips not nails, correct thermal expansion gap at joints. Valleys repaired with flash band, silicone or bitumen are a consistent Eastbourne survey finding. We replace all repaired valleys with correctly specified code 4 or 5 lead. For properties with heavy leaf fall — the Upperton tree canopy, Hampden Park's mature streets — we recommend GRP valley linings as a lower-maintenance alternative.
