GRP Fibreglass — Best for Most Eastbourne Domestic Applications
GRP (glass reinforced polyester) is our default recommendation for domestic flat roofs on Eastbourne properties. It's seamless — the resin is applied as a liquid and cures to a single continuous surface with no joints. Joints are where flat roofs fail. Maintenance: Annual inspection of perimeter trims and outlets. No re-coating required within the warranty period.
Best for: Rear extensions up to approximately 50m², bay window flat sections, porch roofs, garage roofs with limited substrate movement.
Limitations: GRP is less tolerant of substrate movement than EPDM. On timber-framed extensions with green or inadequately dried timber, differential movement can cause GRP to crack at stress points. We check substrate quality at every survey.
EPDM Rubber — Better for Larger Areas and Movement-Prone Substrates
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane bonded to the deck with contact adhesive. It's flexible — movement in the substrate doesn't crack it the way it can crack GRP. In Eastbourne's coastal temperature range, EPDM's flexibility is a meaningful advantage on larger roof areas that experience greater thermal expansion.
Lifespan: 25–50 years. EPDM's flexibility means it doesn't develop the stress fractures that can affect rigid systems in high thermal-cycle environments.
Maintenance: Minimal — the bonded perimeter trims and seams require periodic inspection. Re-bonding of lifted edges is the only common maintenance requirement.
Best for: Larger flat roofs over 50m², garage roofs with masonry walls that move seasonally, roofs where substrate timber is of uncertain moisture content.
